Our Commitment

The Hoop Dreams Basketball Club has three main components. The first is to provide quality development in all aspects of basketball. One of our main goals is to give our athletes the necessary skills to perform successfully in basketball and life. The second component is to provide basketball opportunities for athletes outside of their Yball, AAU and school ball season. Hoop Dreams will strive to enhance each athlete’s skills to better equip them for their short and long term goals with basketball. The third component is to pursue athletic scholarships for those players that have the desire, athletic ability and academic standing to play at the collegiate level. The competitive athletic experience in all grades can enhance social development, physical health and teach life values such as respect, teamwork and responsibility.

Our History

The Hoop Dreams Basketball Club began in 2002 with the “Roberto Bergersen’s Basketball Camp”. This was a single camp held in the summer of 2002. In the following years, more camps were added and in 2005 the Club emerged with a traveling basketball team of 4th and 5th grade boys. Coach Ed Boyce volunteered his time coaching these young boys in pursuit of becoming better basketball players, developing an understanding of basketball, and preparing them for the next level of basketball.

Since then, we have expanded to several traveling teams, including our girls division and our Lil’ Dreamers program. What began as the “Roberto Bergersen’s Hoop Dreams Basketball Camp”, has grown into the following basketball opportunities listed below.

  • Roberto Bergersen’s Hoop Dreams Basketball Camp 2002
  • Premier Hoop Dreams Basketball Camps 2004
  • Hoop Dreams Shooting Academies (Summer/Fall) 2004 Premier traveling teams 2006
  • Lil’ Dreamers Program 2008
  • Idaho’s largest Youth Basketball Club
  • Emphasis on Player Development
  • Provides Youth Basketball Opportunities Year Round
  • Serves over 400 kids annually!

Overview of Team Structure

Each team consists of 7-10 players chosen from the tryout process.

Development Team: Hoop Dreams players committed to developing their skills in order to play competitively and to achieve the goal of being placed on the Premier team. This team will participate in local tournaments and/or out of state tournaments. They will focus on fundamentals and preparing to excel at a higher level of competition. These players are continuously evaluated by coaches and directors for proper placement so they can excel. The purpose of the development program is to provide in-depth instruction on player and team development beyond the recreational leagues.

Premier Team: Hoop Dreams players with advanced fundamental skills who have committed themselves to becoming the best basketball players possible. These players have excelled in the competitive leagues in the local Treasure Valley and are amongst the best in their age/grade. They have committed to playing a longer season and have put forth the effort beyond what is available locally. The Hoop Dreams Club staff is very careful in placing an athlete on a team that best fits their individual skill level so they can play and develop.

Coaches

Hoop Dreams Basketball Club is constantly searching for coaches that have a strong understanding of basketball fundamentals, competitive coaching experience and the ability to teach the athletes a greater understanding of the game. Our goal is to have non-parent coaches involved in the club, with the understanding that there will be individual circumstances where a qualified parent coach will benefit the club and team.

All coaches understand that the overall goal of Hoop Dreams Basketball Club is player development. There will be times when tournaments demand different amounts of playing time for each athlete. We will encourage all aspects of basketball including, but not limited to competition, development, work ethics, fun, hard work and commitment on and off the court. Our coaches are committed to the fundamentals of basketball. We emphasize DEFENSE, shooting, ball handling, transition “O” and “D”, passing, footwork and teamwork!

The Hoop Dreams Basketball Club coaches are hand picked. All coaches in the Hoop Dreams Basketball Club are coaching for the love of the game and instruction of our youth. Hoop Dreams Basketball Club will pay for all travel and out of pocket expenses.

All Hoop Dreams Basketball Club coaches will be screened to insure the safety of our athletes, parents and club environment. The Club Directors and board will evaluate each coach at the conclusion of the season to ensure adequate communication and maintain a high standard in our coaching ranks.

Season

Hoop Dreams Basketball Club will offer an extension to the local basketball seasons including AAU and School Basketball. Listed below is a tentative season schedule:

  • Team Formation is from August-March
  • Practices consist of 2 days a week (up to 4 days a week for tournament preparation).
  • Fundraising, team/player meetings, open gyms, clinics and academies from August-July (Sunday clinics are optional, but there are several tournaments that conclude on Sundays).
  • Hoop Dreams High School teams will play in tournaments from March through July.
  • Teams could play 25-45 games per year.

All teams will practice one to four days a week up to two hours per practice. Practice and games will run from October through July (varies with age/grade). Commitment from players and parents is vital for our success. An uncommitted athlete is unfairly occupying a position that a committed player would love to occupy.

Facilities

Over the past two years, we have been fortunate to host the Hoop Dreams Basketball Club at the Homecourt YMCA. This was made available by the generosity of the Yanke, Stevens and Norby Families.

Tryout and Selection Process

Each year, Hoop Dreams Basketball club will conduct tryouts for each grade and gender. There are several components included in the tryout process. Coaches will evaluate individual skills, teamwork skills, attitude and several basic and advanced basketball skills. We base our selections on tryouts, previous seasons, open gyms, camps and shooting academies and what we estimate their potential to be. There are also intangible aspects that will be evaluated by the coaches which include: work ethic, athletic ability, coachability, competitive attitude, skill ability and potential.

Dues

Participating with the Hoop Dreams Basketball Club takes a commitment from both the parents and athletes. We are a non-profit organization that provides a unique opportunity for your children. As a Club, we are going to assist each team in fundraising to keep the costs to a minimum. Teams can raise funds, or individual families within the team can write checks to cover their costs. Scholarships may be available for certain circumstances of financial hardships, but the family must apply and be qualified to receive a scholarship. This approval process will be evaluated by the Hoop Dreams Club Board and the fundraising coordinator.

Basketball dues are paid on a monthly basis. Monthly dues must be paid by the 5th of each month. If the dues are not paid by the 10th, the athlete will not be allowed to practice or play.

Club dues are based upon the following allocation:

  • Lil’ Dreamers (K-3rd Grade): $60 monthly (4 months)
  • 3rd-8th Grade: $100 monthly (6-9 months)-(plus tournament expenses)
  • 10th-12th Grade: $300 per season (4 months)-(plus tournament expenses)
  • AAU Card: $12 per year

Future Plans

Given the critical need for positive youth programs, coupled with the position that athletics holds in today’s society, we are experiencing ever increasing demand to expand beyond the present opportunities that Hoop Dreams Basketball Club presents.

Our strict adherence to use basketball as our means to develop youth with unwavering belief, self-discipline and the perseverance to overcome all obstacles which will inevitably come their way, will lead to opportunities beyond our imagination; particularly, given the need for such a program in light of the many negative influences facing young people today.
